Strength and balance for 65 plus
Stay on your feet and live the life you want to live
Community Strength & Balance Classes
Across the Waikato there are 120 community classes catering for over 65s who recognise their strength and balance is declining which adds to the risk of falling. These classes are approved as part of the nationwide Live Stronger For Longer movement livestronger.org.nz; classes must meet the Technical Advisory Group and international best practice criteria to be involved. In the Waikato, Midland Community Pharmacy Group manages the approval process, as well as training leaders and promotion of classes.
Classes focus on strength & balance exercises, have seated and standing options and leaders always encourage people to go at their own pace. Styles range from circuits to yoga and exercise to music, are 45-60mins long and cost about $4. As well as getting people confident and steady on their feet, classes are fun; during lockdowns participants said they missed the social aspect most of all.
Anyone can join a class, many do so as self-referrals, others through GPs or transitioning from In-home physio. To find out more & get someone into the best class for them, contact Steph McLennan 027 419 0068 steph@midcpg.co.nz
