About us

Cardiothoracic Surgery is part of Waikato Hospital's CCTVS cluster. It concerns all conditions related to heart, lung, and major blood vessels in the chest.

A large team consisting of specialist surgeons, registrars, and senior house officers, perfusionists technicians, clinical nurse specialists and registered nurse first surgical assistants, a research scientists, manager, and administration support.

Cardiothoracic surgery is the diagnosis and treatment (operative and non-operative) of patients with disorders of structures within the chest including: the heart and vascular system, the lungs and trachea, the oesophagus, the diaphragm, and chest wall. It includes the management of trauma and congenital and acquired disorders of these structures.

Cardiac

  • Coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Aortic valve replacement
  • Mitral valve repair and replacement
  • Surgery for rheumatic heart disease
  • Surgery to correct atrial fibrillation
  • Heart failure surgery
  • Aortic aneurysm management and surgery

Thoracic

  • Minimally invasive chest surgery
  • Lung cancer surgery
  • Pneumothorax
  • Correction of chest wall abnormalities
  • Management of chest wall tumours mesothelioma

Cardiac services continue to expand at Waikato Hospital and provides approximately 725 cases per year. As such – Waikato is the second largest provider of cardiac surgery in New Zealand by volume.

The Waikato Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit has a strong record of accomplishment in teaching, continuing medical education and research, and aims to be a centre of excellence in New Zealand.
